The schooner, Mystic, seems to glow in this painterly work showing her moored in her home port. The village of Mystic straddles the river of the same name, and forms part of the two towns of Groton (West Mystic) and Stonington (to the east of the River Mystic), in the New England state of Connecticut. Famed for its seaport, the village was settled in 1654, following the end of the Pequot Wars. Today the village houses the nation's largest museum of maritime history, including both buildings and ships. The Mystic River flows through Mystic, into Long Island Sound and thence out to sea.
