I based this work on a daytime photograph of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. I wanted to give it more interest and so I made it into a night scene. With the adjacent town hall building in shadow, the church steeple catches the moonlight filtering through the clouds.
Work on the construction of this church building was started on November 10, 1906, the congregation of St Peter's Lutheran having decided to move from their original church, erected in 1795 and remodeled in 1868, because its proximity to the railroad tracks resulted in both safety and noise issues. The church was built in a Gothic style using locally quarried blue limestone and trimmed using Ohio granite. Three large stained glass windows grace the building, depicting scenes from the nativity and from the garden of Gethsemane. The church was completed and dedicated in 1908.
