The early morning sunshine hits German Street. An eager crowd of runners jostle in anticipation as they await the start of the 2013 Freedom's Run marathon. Due to the government shutdown the race had to be re-routed at the last minute for this, its fifth year. The usual route takes runners through four National Parks - Harpers Ferry, the C&O Canal, Antietam National Battlefield, and the Potomac Heritage Trail; in the days leading up to the October race day organizers had to find an alternative route avoiding the government-owned properties. This did not deter the crowds of runners eager to participate in what has been described as one of the 50 US marathons most worth traveling for!
Even the brooding skies and sudden downpours failed to quell the spirits of the runners as they joined in a rousing chorus of the Battle Hymn of the Republic before they set off from Shepherdstown towards Harper's Ferry, site of John Brown's final stand.
